The poem is divided into 11 stanzas, each consisting of four lines. The poet addresses his wife as "sakhi" (friend) and expresses his gratitude for their long and happy marriage. He asks her to hold his hand and look at the stars, as they wait for the auspicious day of Thiruvathira (a festival celebrated by married women in Kerala) to arrive. He recalls their memories of traveling through various paths, facing hardships and joys together, and drinking the bitter-sweet nectar of life. He tells her that he will soon depart from this world and join the eternal light behind the moon, leaving behind only some faded memories and shadows. He asks her to remain calm and composed, and not to shed tears or break her heart. He says that time will pass, seasons will change, flowers will bloom, fruits will ripen, but they will not know who or what they are anymore. He says that they should celebrate their successful journey with a smile and a mantra, and look forward to meeting each other again in another realm.

The poem is a masterpiece of Malayalam literature, as it combines lyrical beauty, philosophical depth, emotional intensity, and cultural richness. The poet uses simple but powerful words and images to convey his feelings and thoughts. The poem also reflects the poet's awareness of his own mortality and his acceptance of death as a natural and inevitable part of life. The poem is a tribute to his wife, who stood by him till the end, and a testament to their everlasting love.

The poem has been recited by many famous personalities, such as actor Mohanlal, singer G.Venugopal, and writer M.T Vasudevan Nair. The poem has also been adapted into a short film by director Pradeep Nair. The poem has inspired many people who are facing terminal illnesses or other challenges in life.
